Marc's Heart Blog

On June 26, 2009, I had open heart surgery to resolve a congenital heart defect called Hypertrophhic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM - "HOKEM" - for short). This condition caused me to be frequently out of breath, suffer from heart palpitations, have generally poor sleep quality and a host of other symptoms. In late January of 2009, I had a heart scare that sent me to the emergency room. I was refered to an excellent cardiologist, Dr. Robert Mingea, and the tests started coming.

First, I had a heart murmur. This I already knew. My heart sounded more like a washing machine than a heart. This was news to me.

Long story shortened, I am at home recoverying from open heart surgery at the age of 42.

This blog will document my recovery as well as cover lessons learned along the way and, hopefully, convey some interesting episodes that occurred along the way.
